Objective. To promote the replacement of conventional plastics with biodegradable, plant-based materials in the automotive sector.

The BioMotive project (Biodegradable Material for Automotive Sector) aims to drive the substitution of conventional plastics with biodegradable, plant-based materials in the automotive industry, advancing toward more sustainable solutions aligned with the principles of the circular economy.

Framed within the 2025 call of the Innovative Business Clusters Program (AEI), this project addresses the challenge of reducing the environmental impact of materials used in industrial environments without compromising their performance, and has been funded by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

BioMotive focuses on the development of new biodegradable, processable materials suitable for integration into automotive applications. To this end, an analysis of alternatives based on natural resources is being carried out, evaluating their potential to replace traditional plastic materials across different industrial uses..

During the initial phases of the project, a state-of-the-art study and review of existing solutions have been conducted, along with the identification of existing materials with the greatest application potential. In this context, the characterization of materials such as those developed by Feltwood has begun, analyzing key aspects such as formability, mechanical behavior, and response to different manufacturing processes.

Additionally, processing and joining strategies are being studied to enable the proper integration of these materials into real applications. This work includes evaluating properties such as adhesion, stability, and performance under use conditions—critical aspects for industrial validation.

At the same time, the industrial feasibility of these materials is being assessed, considering their scalability and compatibility with existing production processes. This approach will help lay the groundwork for their future implementation in real components, supporting the transition toward more sustainable solutions.

With BioMotive, the consortium formed by CAAR, CEAGA, CELULOSA FÁBRIL, MRA, LASIT, and ATRIA is working in a coordinated manner to develop innovative solutions that contribute to a more sustainable industry, promoting the use of renewable materials and reducing dependence on fossil-based plastics.
