Project

Nickel release study in jewelry samples

0

Problem

Jewelry products made up of different metal layers that nickel released when in contact with sweat on the skin.

Objective

Characterization of the products that had given rise to the release of nickel in order to understand the origin of the problem. Once the origin has been identified, propose a technically viable solution.

ATRIA Solution

Characterizations were carried out by means of FIB-SEM, since this technique allows the analysis of the cross section of the product, in addition to its chemical composition. After analyzing the samples, the source of the problem was identified and different options were proposed to prevent nickel release: different configurations and thicknesses of protective metal layers, application of protective graphene coatings, and application of organic coatings.
