Multi-Camera Vision Systems

PORTADA-2

Nowadays, Computer Vision is one of the most widely used techniques in the industry, with the aim of automating tasks and obtaining better results in the most efficient way. Its method consists of analyzing and extracting data from images previously obtained by cameras.
In addition, in cases where it is necessary to perform a large number of checks with several cameras, it is common to use a Multi-Camera Vision System.

Computer Vision Cameras

Computer Vision applications are performed by using special cameras already prepared for use in industrial environments and with a multitude of configuration options. In this way, by means of a computer it is possible to make a very diverse use of these cameras, programming the moment of the shot or changing certain configurations at the moment.
It is also common for this type of camera to allow compatibility with different programming languages, to the point of having developed a standard method of communication, which allows almost universal compatibility.
On the other hand, it is important to note that these cameras transfer images at high speed, something of vital importance in many applications where it is necessary to obtain results quickly.

Multi-Camera Vision Systems

For more complex cases that require a large number of inspections, the best solution is to use several cameras at the same time, managed by a single computer. This type of system makes it possible to take images from different points of the production line practically at the same time, thus obtaining a more flexible system.
As all the cameras are managed by a single computer, there is greater coordination between the cameras. This makes it possible to vary their behavior easily according to the situation, without the need for complex communications. For example, it is possible to determine which cameras to use depending on the part to be observed.
computer vision systemsThese systems allow great flexibility, as they can be easily modified. For example, cameras can be added or removed with relative ease as there is no need to configure new equipment. In addition, the management of the results and their processing is facilitated as they are all processed in the same place. This would be much more complicated if each camera had its own system for managing results.
However, although this type of set-up has great advantages, it is necessary to take into consideration some characteristics. It is important to be able to manage the volume of communication between the cameras and the central equipment, if the amount of data is too high the system could become saturated. On the other hand, it is necessary to have an equipment with enough power to manage all the data and results at the necessary speed, since it will have to process the information from several cameras.

Industry applications

The applications of this type of systems are very varied, as with conventional vision systems. Their main strength is the possibility of taking images in parallel, from different points with which tasks can be performed in parallel. For this reason, multi-camera systems are the most commonly used when several different points in production need to be inspected.
computer visionAnother case in which these multi-camera systems are used is in the case of large elements to be inspected. Or, in cases where it is physically impossible for all points to fit into an image taken from a single position. In these situations it is impossible to use a single camera to perform all the checks. Therefore, a multi-camera system capable of inspecting all points, or even reconstructing a complete image of the element from the images taken by the different cameras, is chosen.
Multi-camera systems allow great flexibility and ease of management, making them ideal for the most complex applications. They may require equipment with higher processing power and greater difficulty of configuration. But once this first obstacle has been overcome, tasks become much easier.
However, as in all cases, the most important thing is to know how to identify the type of application to be carried out. In this way, to determine the most suitable system and the one that provides the best results. Although multi-camera systems are very versatile, there may be cases in which a less complex solution may end up being more efficient.
