Materials resistant to extreme weather conditions! Today we focus on wind turbine blades. What kind of problems arise at 100 meters above the ground?
Renewable energies produce electricity without greenhouse gases generation. In recent years, there has been a continuous increase on clean energy production, and R&D investments to improve their performance. In wind energy efforts are focused in the performance of materials used in the construction of wind turbines. Have you ever wondered how weather influences the materials wind turbines are made of?
Currently wind turbines blades are made of different materials depending on their size, small wind turbines are made of steel and aluminum alloys, and fiberglass reinforced with polyester or epoxy resin are used in the big ones. Materials suffer erossion due to adverse weather conditions and exposure over time, and this affects negatively the cost of wind farms.
There are several research lines opened for the development of new materials, protective surfaces that increase the resistance to wind-transported particles, weathering, temperature variations, moisture, UV rays,… One of these research lines is carried out by the University Institute of Ceramic Technology of Castellón (IUTC) who have developed a high strenght and erosion resistance material, as well as photocatalytic and antifouling coatings (antifouling paint), also with high durability.
