Objective. Know if the orange waste has valuable compounds
Our client, an orange waste manager, would like to know if it is possible to extract valuable compounds from this waste. It is currently used as an ingredient for animal feed but has low value, profitability and its consumption is seasonal.
The objective is to know the compounds it contains and, if they are interesting, design the best sustainable extraction process to later be able to market it.
Solution. We analyze and characterize the residue. We design the sustainable compound extraction process
The first step was to know our client’s orange waste, the processed orange pulp. We carried out a series of characterizations to find out the most interesting compounds. With this information, confirmed the presence of valuable compounds, we studied the best extraction techniques in the most sustainable way.

We designed an extraction system on a laboratory scale, the process was water-based, the least polluting way. We focused on two compounds, and through the extraction process that we designed and optimized we achieved a purity of both compounds of more than 96%.
The next step was the search for potential clients interested in these high-value compounds. The result for our client was an increase in economic profitability in the selling of these two new by-products.
