This 2019 we believe that will bring many novelties in terms of Materials. You will see that there are some topics that you will already know and that will definitely land this year and new ones that are coming to stay. There we go 2019!
1. IMM (In Mould Microstructuration):
This year new microstructures will be developed that will allow long lasting properties of hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity. Thanks to the laser, it is possible to realize micro-patterns on metal surfaces and also in polymers through the structuring of molds or IMM. The use of these microstructures allows large savings while introducing a new surface property in the material.
2. Materials coming from waste valorization:
It has been a trending topic since some years and slowly has been gaining followers. This technology allows using extraction and treatment techniques to valorize (give a new use) a material that had no value and use it or sell it with new properties. It is possible to valorize chemical residues, food, paper, metal etc. and get new materials at much lower cost.
3. Pastes and piezoelectric inks:
The use of ink-jet and 3D printers is becoming more common. One of the improvements that is expected for this year is to be able to print with these equipments conductive tracks to get sensitive plastics to the touch, heat and deformation. This will allow to incorporate buttons to curved pieces and create more sophisticated designs.
4. Photovoltaic Glass:
Photovoltaic glass, incorporates transparent semiconductors based on photovoltaic cells. In this way you can have a window on your facade that also generates electricity. It is a great leap from the previous generation of solar panels that were placed on the roofs because it allows the light to pass (it is not totally transparent, but it allows the passage of light) and can be installed anywhere.
5. Metamaterials:
They are artificial materials with a property that could not occur in nature. One of the most striking are those that allow control and manipulation of light or sound. These properties are given by the material that constitutes them, their geometry and the fields to which they are subjected. With them it is possible to get invisible materials! We regret to inform you that they are materials that are not yet in the industrialization phase, but we like them so much that we have wanted to keep a gap in this list because we believe that in the coming years we will hear a lot about them.
