Objective: Autonomous movement through the field
Our client, who has developed an agricultural vehicle capable of incorporating different types of implements, needs the vehicle to be able to move around the field autonomously. The field is a very variable environment and a robust and effective navigation system is needed. The navigation system that is designed must be able to overcome obstacles such as branches, stones, mounds and any natural element that can be found in the field. It must also be able to guide and reference itself independently in order to go from one point to another without help and without supervision.
Solution: Development of our own navigation system
The solution we proposed was the development of an ‘ad hoc’ navigation system. In this way, we could adapt the solution to the navigation situation in the field, with the complexities and changes that it entails. At ATRIA, we selected the technology we would use to collect information about the environment, one of the key points of the project. In this case, we opted for LiDAR and GPS technology.
We manage the navigation data using ROS2 and with communication protocols for the different sensors. This information is what we process and send to the wheel actuators and the motor.
Navigation is carried out through the waypoints that the AGV reaches along the routes it takes.
We carried out several different tests. Firstly in controlled environments, and finally in olive groves. The autonomous tractor with the navigation system developed by ATRIA was able in all cases to navigate efficiently without assistance, avoid obstacles and correct trajectories when necessary.
