Characterization for reverse engineering

We use FTIR to know the composition of our customer’s competitor’s polymer and characterize it accurately.

Objective. To know the materials used by the competition

Our customer, a large-scale polymer manufacturer, wants to know the composition of a polymer from their main competitor. They would like to know what are the main differences in composition with their product. Our customer’s ultimate goal is to be able to improve the performance of their product to offer superior quality.

Solution. We characterize by FTIR

The first step was to select the most appropriate technique to study the polymer. In this particular case we chose FTIR and performed the test in different areas of the sample to ensure a good result.

From the spectrum we obtained, we extracted the most representative peaks and compared it with the library of spectra. Having a complete and accurate library is key in this type of project to be able to identify the compounds. We represent this % similarity as the ‘Hit quality’. When we identified these peaks, we were able to identify the compounds and additives, which is the information our client needed.

Once we collected all the data, we prepared a report for our client, which was fundamental in the design of the new product.
