Objective. Valorize sludge rich in sulfur
Our client, a consumer products manufacturer, has natural gas burners in its plant that produce a sludge with high sulfur content. His goal is to find a treatment for this waste and, if possible, market it to make a profit.
Solution. We characterize and design the treatment to extract sulfur
The first step was to analyze the process in which the sludge generated by the client as waste was produced. We performed an initial analysis to understand the sludge and what valuable compounds it had. The focus was sulfur. The next step was to study which treatment options were most appropriate for this case and we detected the key points of the current process.
We designed a laboratory-scale treatment to separate the liquid phase and the solid phase of the sludge, and once optimized we proposed 2 new recovery strategies: the treatment of waste water and the treatment of the resulting solids.

The liquid phase was suitable for management in the client’s water treatment plant.
For the solid phase, which was the one containing the valuable compound, we designed a second treatment to purify it and carried out all the necessary characterizations. The final step was the search for potential clients interested in this valuable compound given the great properties that were achieved.
