Through different techniques we can modify the surface of a material to protect it against external agents, avoid the deposition of substances, improve its properties or achieve new functionalities that the base material does not have.
For example, we can make our surface superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic, oleophobic, self-cleaning, resistant to abrasion or corrosion.

How can I transform a surface?
The functional coatings provide extra properties or characteristics to those of the base or bulk material. They are applied by a thin layer through techniques such as spraying, dip-coating or PVD.
These coatings allow to improve the properties of the final product: how to get surfaces to achieve easy cleaning, hooks for painting tunnels that do not need to be sent to clean, to avoid condensation in unwanted areas or to avoid the formation of lime..
Aditivation and Polymers
An alternative to coatings, if our material is a polymer, are the additives. They allow us to incorporate additional properties to pieces with very low quantities of additive., We select, develop, optimize and adapt the additive for each project.
The additives or special polymers can improve the condensation, sliding between pieces (slip), static electricity, adhesion… We can also , convert the plastic into an hydrophilic one (wet) so it is possible to achieve and homogeneus deposition of the ink, through tampography or ink-jet techniques, ..
Micro-structuring and microtexturing
The laser microestructuration is a technique that allows to modify the roughness of a surface in a controlled way, creating a pattern of elements such as pillars, channels, holes,… In contrast to the coatings, we do not add material but selectively remove parts of the material to have a new structure.
This pattern can give to the surface new properties depending on the geometry and the size of the microstructures. We can achieve properties such as superhydrophobicity, hydrophilicity, condensation, anti-icing or water slipping.
The microtexturizado also allows us to create visual effects and tactile (haptics) to improve the user experience. Also, it is a technique that can be used in welding processes between plastic and metal.
The smart materials can modify their properties through an external stimulus. There are several types: they apply through a thin layer through techniques such as spray or dip-coating.
