IN-MOULD MICROSTRUCTURATION to improve cleaning properties on injected plastics

At ATRIA we work on the development of a new generation of surface solutions that improve cleaning properties of plastic products. Today we tell you one of them.

Surface texturing using laser technology is a technology known in the field of materials engineering to achieve different aesthetic finishes on the surface of different materials. However, when we perform texturing on a micrometric scale, other phenomena occur that allow us to provide the surface, not only with a new finish or design, but also with new functional properties.

ATRIA engineers work on surface microtexturing using laser technology to achieve different functional properties in the materials. For example, we can get the surface to become superhydrophobic or antibacterial. That is to say, we avoid, for example, that the dirt adheres, or that bacterial biofilm is created because we inhibit the adhesion of bacteria and the proliferation of living organisms.

To industrialize this technology in the sector of injection of plastics we must microtexturize the mold, in which the component is manufactured, with a suitable microstructure. Thus, during the injection we get a transfer of the structure of the mold to the polymer, and this leaves the mold with the pattern that we have designed on its surface. In the following image we can see the different phases of the In Mould Microstructuration (IMM) process.

The main advantage of this technology is that it is not necessary to additivate the polymer, nor to add an additional process in the manufacture of the component to apply a coating. It is a process that is carried out continuously without altering the manufacturing process.
